University of Essex
Essex, United Kingdom

University description (as per official university website)

The University of Essex is proud to be one of the most diverse university communities in the UK, with students coming from over 130 different countries to study here. We are pleased that you are considering studying at the University of Essex. The main purpose of this web page is to provide you with information about life at the University, what you need to do in preparation for your arrival and what to expect once you arrive in the UK, from a social and academic perspective, so that you are fully prepared for most eventualities.

Why choose Essex?

Excellence in teaching and research: Based on the quality of its performance in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, Essex was placed tenth out of 136 universities in the UK for research quality with individual departments scoring well. In national assessments for teaching Essex was ranked seventh in the UK for teaching quality.

A strong international reputation: Essex is proud of its international diversity and our academic rankings and international outlook ensure the University is both well known and respected around the world. Current Essex alumni can be found working in top jobs in business, industry and education.

A wide range of flexible degrees: Essex offers a wide range of degree schemes at all levels and across 18 different academic departments, as well as an impressive choice of course options. Undergraduate degrees offer a particularly flexible structure and offer the opportunity to try new subjects in addtion to your main choice. There is also the option to change degree choice at the end of the first year.

Outstanding facilities: In addition to its academic staff which includes researchers and scholars of international distinction, the University provides an excellent library with long opening hours and collections of international importance, modern science and engineering laboratories, 14 open access computer labs and excellent sports facilities.

An ideal location: The University's main site is situated in a beautiful parkland campus in Colchester, just 55 miles (87 km) from central London, which can be reached within an hour using the frequent trains. The campus was conceived as a university town rather than a single building, and incorporates teaching buildings, student accommodation, shops, banks, a gallery and a theatre, bars and cafés, and sports facilities all on the one site.

The East 15 Acting School is in Loughton and became part of the University of Essex in September 2000, while the University of Essex Southend , together with South East Essex College, also offer a range of degrees at the state-of-the-art Southend Campus.

A friendly, international environment: Essex has always welcomed students from overseas so that today, students at Essex feel part of a thriving international community. Currently 40% of our students come from outside the UK and from over 120 different countries worldwide.
