Excellence in teaching and research: Based on the quality of its performance in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, Essex was placed tenth out of 136 universities in the UK for research quality with individual departments scoring well. In national assessments for teaching Essex was ranked seventh in the UK for teaching quality.

A wide range of flexible degrees: Essex offers a wide range of degree schemes at all levels and across 18 different academic departments, as well as an impressive choice of course options. Undergraduate degrees offer a particularly flexible structure and offer the opportunity to try new subjects in addtion to your main choice. There is also the option to change degree choice at the end of the first year.
Outstanding facilities: In addition to its academic staff which includes researchers and scholars of international distinction, the University provides an excellent library with long opening hours and collections of international importance, modern science and engineering laboratories, 14 open access computer labs and excellent sports facilities.
An ideal location: The University's main site is situated in a beautiful parkland campus in Colchester, just 55 miles (87 km) from central London, which can be reached within an hour using the frequent trains. The campus was conceived as a university town rather than a single building, and incorporates teaching buildings, student accommodation, shops, banks, a gallery and a theatre, bars and cafés, and sports facilities all on the one site.
The East 15 Acting School is in Loughton and became part of the University of Essex in September 2000, while the University of Essex Southend , together with South East Essex College, also offer a range of degrees at the state-of-the-art Southend Campus.
