University description (as per official university website)
The University of Derby’s performance, particularly in the last four years, demonstrates how successfully a university can support its community when its mission is clear, its management is efficient and the individual student is put at the heart of everything we do. The University has a growing reputation for the quality of its provision (two recent exceptional Quality Assurance Agency reviews testify to this); our Buxton campus is a huge success with excellent student recruitment figures and two conservation awards; the estates consolidation in Derby is delivering a compact high quality campus within the emerging University Quarter; the UK student population is at an all time high and the University's operating surplus is healthy , having grown each year for the past four years. It will grow again for year end 06/07.
The University of Derby has exceeded its HEFCE student recruitment targets for the September 06 intake and been fully funded for that growth. We expect to be in the same position for 2007/08. We were delighted to be a finalist in two categories of the THES Awards in 2006 and to have had our Learning Through Work team win one of the awards. All of our current projects are funded with no additional borrowing. The University has had a consistent, improved performance over the past 4 years.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and commitment of our staff and importantly the support and assistance of HEFCE as a partner - doing what they do well - supporting Universities to deliver. Their assessment process is proper, rigorous and supportive and the current management team acknowledge the support and guidance we have received. We are also, of course, enormously grateful for the support of our local and regional community and to the students who come from across the UK and indeed the world to study with us. Together, we can be justifiably proud of our achievements.
