University description (as per official university website)
Bournemouth University is a modern and innovative institution with six distinctive Schools of study reflecting our emphasis on education as a pathway to professional success.
We enjoy a reputation for our commitment to wide ranging opportunities through learning, research and enterprise.
We are one of the premier providers of higher education for the professions in the UK. We work with key employers and other organisations closely-related to our areas of expertise. Our courses are designed and delivered in such a way as to give our graduates a head start in pursuing employment and career enhancement. Bournemouth University consistently has one of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK (nearly 85% compared to national average of 74.3% - Higher Education Statistics Agency 2003/4).
We are large enough to offer our students diversity, yet small enough for them to be part of a friendly and thriving cosmopolitan community.
We are proud of our quality assurance record. The most recent teaching quality assessments have resulted in ratings of 'excellent' for courses in the areas of communication and media, business and management, catering and hospitality, archaeology and nursing and midwifery.
Over the last 30 years, more than 35,000 have graduated from Bournemouth University and its predecessor institutions.
BU was one of the first UK Universities selected to pilot Peer Assisted Learning for first-year students and is now regarded as a model of 'best practice' in the sector.
We have appointed 38 new academics - all with track records in research and enterprise.
We implemented and enhanced the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to encourage flexible student learning.
We significantly enhanced prospective and student experiences through the establishment of askBU, our centralised enquiry and information service.
We changed and strengthened significantly our branding and raised our external profile. This included launching a new BU website, signage and PR.
We secured 800 beds in new student accommodation in Bournemouth and Poole.
We have recruited 53 fully-funded PhD students as part of the largest recruitment scheme in the sector.
The Media School has introduced the UK's first University-based Sony High Definition (HD) state-of-the-art television studio.
BU is joint host to the only Skillset Screen Academy in England outside London. Skillset is the sector skills council for the audio visual industries in the UK.
