Information for International Students
Aberystwyth provides a warm welcome to international students from over 90 countries.If you are considering entering Aberystwyth from another country then you will probably have special questions to ask which are different to those asked by UK students. This section is intended to provide some answers to those questions but please feel free to contact us if you would like to obtain more information.
Who will advise me?
Specialist advisers attend exhibitions and fairs in many parts of the world and can provide advice and guidance to you on studying at Aberystwyth. Your Personal Tutor and the University’s Director of Student Support will also be pleased to assist if you encounter problems.
What help is available to settle in at the University?
A special welcome day is organised for international students at the start of your first term. Here you will meet staff, students and other new international students.
There is also a Student Mentor scheme which allows you to be paired with a second or third year undergraduate for your first couple of weeks in Aberystwyth. They will be available to advise you on day-to-day issues and to help you settle in smoothly.
How do I apply for an undergraduate degree scheme?
You should apply through UCAS.
The Educational Counselling Service of the British Council will be pleased to provide you with advice if you are resident in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore or a number of other countries.
Which English language qualification will I need?
Our courses are taught in English and you will need to have a good command of the language. If you require help or assistance with your English then our Language and Learning Centre will be pleased to offer assistance and guidance. The Centre offers you an intensive full-time course before you commence your degree and provides continuing support throughout the duration of your studies. Courses available are Target English (with foundation option) and the pre-university course in English for Academic Purposes. The basic English language requirements are:
- JMB Test in English for Overseas Students (grades 1-3);
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English;
- AEB Test in English for Educational Purposes (pass in Band II only);
- University of London ‘O’ level syllabus B121 for candidates whose mother tongue is not English (pass at grade A);
- TOEFL: A score of at least 580 must be achieved;
- Cambridge/British Council International English Language Testing Services (IELTS). A score of 6.5 must be achieved;
- Successful completion of the pre-university course in English for Academic Purposes offered by the Language and Learning Centre (this may include an IELTS test);
- English Language Courses.
