University description (as per official university website)
Specialising in the liberal arts, Lampeter has strong academic traditions in teaching and research dating from 1822. Located in rural Wales, the beautiful and enriching environment fosters a supportive and caring community where student satisfaction is a priority. The aim of the university is not only to produce graduates who enjoy their study, but who also leave with skills relevant to today’s changing economy: an education for life.
10 reasons to join the university, as quoted from the official website:
High Student Satisfaction
The first two National Student Satisfaction Surveys reported high levels of student satisfaction at Lampeter. In 2007, Lampeter students recorded an overall satisfaction score of 4.1 on a scale of 1 to 5, and 83% of respondents agreed that they were satisfied with the quality of their course.
A Friendly and Supportive Community
In Lampeter we pride ourselves on our friendly manner. Staff are approachable and most operate an open door policy where students are free to call in at any time
A Safe Place to Live and Work
The local police force, Dyfed-Powys, regularly report the lowest crime rates in the country with both personal and household crime levels half the average for England and Wales. The sense of personal safety that this brings means that you have more time and energy to concentrate on enjoying life.
A Beautiful and Enriching Environment
We are located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, surrounded by rolling green hills and home to the rare red kite. At the same time, we are only 13 miles from the sea where seals and dolphins are a regular sight.
Small Class Sizes
In Lampeter you are not a nameless face in the crowd. Our class sizes are small enough that we get to know our students and this provides you with more opportunity for interaction with lecturers and an enhanced learning experience. To quote one of our students "People take an interest in you and not just your tuition fees".
Low Accommodation and Living Costs
Due to our location, the costs of living in Lampeter are lower than in many other parts of the country. This means that your student loan goes further in Lampeter. Accommodation on campus (guaranteed in your first year) starts from £54.40 per week, and there is no need to budget for public transport. The Independent newspaper and The Push Guide rated Lampeter as the 6th most affordable place to study in the UK in October 2007.
A Hectic Social Life
Even though Lampeter is not a large city, there is plenty of student-centred entertainment and activities, both on campus and in town. Our students frequently complain that they are too busy to write their essays!
Excellence in Research
Lampeter has a national and international reputation for the quality of its research. Particular strengths include Theology & Religious Studies, English, Archaeology and History. This expertise is fed directly into the classroom so your lecturers really know their subjects and, eventually, so will you.
A Long History
The University of Wales, Lampeter is the third oldest degree-awarding institution in England and Wales, beaten only by Oxford and Cambridge. We were founded in 1822 with the St David's building modelled on an Oxford college, complete with an accommodation quad, dining hall, library and chapel.
We are proud of our record of widening participation to higher education. With pre-degree foundation studies, part-time and distance learning courses, as well as traditional full-time courses, the choice of how and when to study is yours. The Times Higher Education Supplement has identified Lampeter as one of the UKs leading universities for successfully combining widening access with low dropout rates and excellence in teaching and research.
