Vienna International Model United Nations (VIMUN)
Vienna, Austria

Scholarship / Financial aid: small conference fee available

Date: 11 - 15 August 2013

Deadline: 30 June 2013

Open to: international students and young people

Announcement follows

A Model United Nations (MUN) is a meeting where students authentically simulate negotiations of specific committees and organs of the United Nations. Participants choose a country and research their chosen country's position regarding a specific topic. After preparation, they step into the shoes of diplomats and represent this country in a committee. They debate, convince, bring forward new solutions and solve a world conflict with their own resolution.

Why participate at MUNs?

Thousands of students actively take part in MUNs, debating either at training sessions at clubs or at international conferences that are organized all over the world.

The motivation for participation in MUNs is simple, yet very convincing:

+improve your negotiation and public speaking skills
+become a better team-worker and leader
+get an insight into an UN diplomat's work
+make practical use of your political knowledge
+meet and stay in touch with students from all around the world

Why Vienna?

Vienna - for many centuries the center of the Habsburg Empire and the city known for the Vienna Congress - has turned from the role as "imperial capital" to a meeting place for various international conferences. Since 1979 Vienna is one of the "United Nations capitals" with about 4000 people from all over the world working for the Vienna based International Organizations such as IAEA, UNIDO and UNODC. In addition, Vienna serves as headquarter also for OSCE or OPEC. Vienna combines the facades of the past, the life-style of the present and space for reflections for the future.

VIMUN is organized by the United Nations Youth and Student Association of Austria - Academic Forum for Foreign Affairs (UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA) as Austrian youth link to the United Nations and to the Austrian Foreign Ministry. Already since 1995 every year up to 250 students and young graduates from about 40 different nations participate at VIMUN. As the conference entirely takes place at the United Nations Office at Viennna, VIMUN is perhaps the most authetical MUN world-wide. VIMUN is known for its professional organization and its balanced programme with sincere negotiations on the day as well as an unique social programme in the evenings and nights - in the tradition of the "Vienna Congress". VIMUN welcomes experienced MUN participants but also attracts students who take part at a MUN for the first time.VIMUN is open to students and young people from 18 to 35 years of age from all nations worldwide.

Conference Fee

For a single delegate the Conference Fee is 190,- EUR, it includes:

+proportional costs of the VIMUN conference
+all conference materials
+official ID of the United Nations Office at Vienna for the periode of VIMUN
+certificate of participation
+meals at Sunday evening (self payment of drinks)
+meals and drinks on Monday evening
+meals and drinks on Tuesday evening

Reduced Conference Fee

For participants of the following three groups the Conference Fee is only 170,- EUR:

+Regular Members of the UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA, who have paid their annual membership fee
+Delegates, who participated at VIMUN in previous years ("Veterans").
+Members of a "Delegation": A delegation is a group of VIMUN participants consisting of at least five people. Still, each participant is a single representative/delegate of one country in one of the committees. Though, each participant of the delegation might represent the same country in the different committees. The two main advantages for participating at VIMUN as delegation are joint preparation and financial reduction for all delegates. The Conference Fee for each participant within a delegation is 170,- EUR. The name of the Head of Delegation should be indicated on the registration form.

Chaperons are persons who accompany a delegation to the conference (eg. Faculty Advisors). For chaperons the Conference Fee is 100,- EUR.

Financial Support

VIMUN is organized on a strictly voluntary basis with no financial benefits for the Members of the Organizing Team. But Vienna is not one of the cheapest cities and contributions through state subsidies or private donors are declining. The actual costs for organizing the conference are of course much higher (about 400,- EUR per person) than the Conference Fees charged of the participant. But thanks to its partners the UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA can keep the Conference Fee as low as announced above. Therefore, every participant will be asked to sign an according form for the partners of the UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA at the Registration Table upon arrival.

Only under very special circumstances might participants be granted additional financial support in form of reduced Conference Fees. A corresponding request has to be sent to the Secretary General of VIMUN ( with details about the participant's social and financial situation. If this additional support is available the participant will receive an official confirmation mail from the Secretary General. Other arrangements are not possible. Participants will be asked to present this confirmation mail at the registration table at the beginning of the conference in Vienna.

Participants are also encouraged to find funding sources in their home countries for which purpose the UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA can provide a letter of support.

Please understand that most institutions (Federal Ministries etc.) in Austria have already been asked by the UNYSA-AUSTRIA-AFA for supporting the conference. Therefore, it would be useless if students from abroad would contact them also individually. Consequently, participants are strictly requested not to contact institutions in Austria for scholarships.

Interested applicants should send their registration by 30 June 2013 (or 31 May if they are in need of a visa for Austria).
