Announcement follows
The Fljótstunga Artistic Residency is a young project interested in the relationship between nature and travel as a way to reflect upon our own social/artistic role and practice.
For the past 4 years Halldór and Lilian have been building up a small foundation based on ideas of exchange and the complex value of structure and infrastructure in order to develop the project. This year we have finally managed to open our doors to artists.
The residency is intended for creative process work and its objective is to support artistic research, with an awareness on the working environment. The residency allows artists to focuse on their individual work, as it is in a very isolated place. At the same time it offers a personal and professional exchange between the residents that share this isolation.
The residency is located in Fljótstunga, Iceland, a 20 km2 land which is a 1 hour drive away from the nearest town. The land is preserved by the residency and it is part of the Saga Geopark project in Iceland.
The residency is interested in hosting national and international artists and promoting connections to the Icelandic nature, culture and art scene. These connections can be offered through exhibitions and workshops at the residency, events that intertwine with cultural rural Icelandic activities or by helping artists to establish contacts within the corresponding Icelandic scene in the capital city of Iceland for production aspects.
The residency project is in a developing stage, and would like to be transformed by each person involved. Each residency period is unique. The outcome of the residency depends on each artist.
The residency is a eco-friendly establishment and is surrounded by exotic nature. The residency offers private cottages for each artist or artistic group and has a simple communal working space. Each artist is expected to bring their own working tools which need to be ecologically friendly. This means bio-degradable products and materials or recycled materials, or to avoiding projects that create a lot of trash. The residency is free of charge and can host up to 50 artists per year.
Artists can come either by invitation, a selection through an application process or by cooperation between other organizations such as festivals. Foreign artists are expected to have their own funds to arrive to the residency, but can be offered up to full living and travel expenses during their stay, depending on the program.
Facilities
At Fljótstunga Residency we offer 7 cottages with 2 to 4 beds. All cottages have WC, cooking facilities and a small seating area. Some have private shower.
The common space has a larger kitchen, dinning, seating area and small exhibition space. It is also where residents have access to basic wifi and an open working space.
The farm is a 20km2 land with lava fields, rivers, hills, lakes and views of glaciers. Read more about the farm
Linen
Residents can bring their own linen and towels but have the option of renting them from Fljótstunga for 5.000 ISK.
Cleaning
All residents are asked to take care of and clean the cottages during their stay and before departing. If your cottage is not properly clean you will be charged a 10.000 ISK fee.
Type of residency
Beginning or middle of the creative process of any art discipline. Site related projects. This residency is mostly intended for practice based research purposes, it does not provide working tools and is therefore not suited for final stage prodution projects. Internet based projects are not suitable for this residency as Fljótstunga would like to provide an alternative source of stimulation. Fljótstunga shares with the residents a basic way of life and through limited resourses and few external options, invites artists to think about ways and reasons to work.
