Romanian Association for International Cooperation and Development Essay Competition

Scholarship / Financial aid: 3 months internship with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Date: 2015

Deadline: November 2, 2014

Open to: students and young professionals

Announcement follows

The Romanian Association for International Cooperation and Development invites all students and young professionals to express their opinion on the main issues concerning the post-2015 development agenda in an argumentative essay answering the following question:

What is in your opinion the most important need that should be globally addressed and highlighted by the new development agenda (mainly the post-2015 agenda and the SDGs)?

Entries must be submitted by November 2, 2014, midnight Central European Time.

The first 3 ranking essays will be published in the Romanian International Development Review new edition to be launched in November 2014. The best essay will be awarded a 3 months internship with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the book “We the Peoples: A UN for the Twenty-First Century”, written by Kofi Annan (Paradigm Publishers, 2014).

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) launched in September 2000 as part of “United Nations Millennium Declaration”, ranging from inter alia the promotion of environmental sustainability, gender equality and women empowerment to the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, all by the target date of 2015, remain at the heart of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post- 2015 agenda further aiming toward poverty eradication and for a sustainable development.

According to the UN General Assembly 2012, paras.246-7, the SDGs announced in “The Future We Want”, should “address and incorporate in a balanced way all three dimensions of sustainable development and their inter-linkages… We also underscore that SDGs should be action-oriented, concise and easy to communicate, limited in number, aspirational, global in nature and universally applicable to all countries while taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities… Government should drive implementation [of the SDGs] with the active involvement of all relevant stakeholders, as appropriate.”
