Lund Humphries Emerging Art Writers Competition

Scholarship / Financial aid: N/A

Date: 2014

Deadline: 1 September 2014

Open to: aspiring art writers

Announcement follows

A fantastic opportunity for aspiring art writers to showcase their work to movers and shakers from the British art world.

To enter, write an essay of between 1,500 and 2,500 words which answers the question: What, if anything, is the legacy of British Modernism in British art today?

The winning entrant will have the opportunity to have his or her essay published in the January 2015 issue of leading art magazine Apollo and will win two VIP tickets to our flagship 75th birthday event to be held at the ICA in November 2014. He or she will also receive £75 worth of Lund Humphries art books and have the opportunity to meet with a member of the Lund Humphries commissioning team to discuss future book projects.

Lund Humphries has a reputation for producing beautiful books on Modern and contemporary British artists. Our authors write in a serious yet accessible way; our readers value texts which are well-researched and original but not overly theoretical in approach. We suggest that entrants read the Criteria for Good Art Writing and have a look at some of our recently published books for further guidance on style and tone.

The competition judges will be looking for both an imaginative and thought-provoking response to the question and lively and user-friendly writing. They would like to see a range of approaches to the question, including, for example, essays that focus on a particular contemporary artist or theme as well as essays which survey developments in a particular medium or genre.

The panel of judges includes:

Lucy Myers, Managing Director of Lund Humphries

Ian McKeever, artist

Simon Martin, Artistic Director at Pallant House

Thomas Marks, Editor of Apollo magazine

The competitionís closing time and date is 5pm on Monday 1 September 2014.
