PSI Winter School for Protons 2012
Bad Zurzach, Switzerland

Scholarship / Financial aid: none

Date: January 14–18, 2012

Deadline: N/A

Open to: physicians and medical physicists

Announcement follows

Welcome to the 2012 PSI Winter School for Proton Therapy

In January 2012 the Center for Proton Therapy at Paul Scherrer Institute will be holding the 5th annual Winter School for Proton Therapy.
We have structured the program to focus on specific aspects and challenges that physicians and medical physicists will encounter in daily practice.
The technical side of the program will emphasize active beam scanning technology. At PSI we have used Spot Scanning in clinical routine for more than 10 years, a technology that emerged from the Pion Program in the ‘80s. We would like to share our knowledge of IMPT that we have introduced into our treatment planning several years ago.
What is a good treatment plan with spot scanning? What criteria should raise our concerns and what are the "Do’s and Don’t’s" of planning concepts, target definitions and dose prescriptions? In lectures with ample discussion time and workshops we will heighten risk awareness and sharpen skills.
Some of the most established clinical indications for Proton Radiotherapy are relatively rare tumour entities, for example chordomas, chondrosarcomas, other soft tissues sarcomas and paediatric malignancies. Few training opportunities are offered in those specialities, yet expert knowledge is immediately expected once a Proton Therapy facility becomes operational. We aim at acquainting course participants with functional anatomy, natural history, target definition, dose prescriptions and expected results for such indications.
The Winter School will be limited to approximately 40 participants to optimize teacher / student ratio, "one-on-one" conversations over the course duration, workshops in small groups and plenty of discussions following the lectures.
Bad Zurzach has wonderful thermal baths which will provide relaxation after days of stimulating intellectual exchange.
On behalf of the entire team of the Center for Proton Radiation Therapy at Paul Scherrer Institute I want to welcome you to the 2012 Winter School.

Organizing Committee

Tony Lomax, Gudrun Goitein, Eros Pedroni, Martin Jermann

• Basics in radiation physics, radiation biology of particles and Proton RBE
• Accelerator and beam line technology
• Active beam scanning
• Toxicities
• Clinical outcomes of proton radiation therapy
• OAR Constraints
• Integral dose, neutron irradiation, second malignancies
• Treatment planning for scanned proton beams, IMPT
• Future of proton therapy

We are scheduling generous time for discussion after each presentation.
