University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences, in partnership with University of Basel – Faculty of Humanities and the Institute for Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding (Switzerland), University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Political Sciences, (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and University of Zagreb – Faculty of Political Sciences, (Croatia) is pleased to announce the call for applications for the first Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies (

The Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies consists of two semesters, each carrying 30 ECTS credits. All partner Universities have the same curriculum during the first semester, and in the second each University offers specialized programs. In the first semester, students enroll at the home University. They may decide to remain at the home University in the second semester as well, or they may chose to spend the second semester at one of the partner Universities.

Upon completing both semesters, and attaining 60 ECTS – 12 of which are accrued through successful writing and defense of a master’s thesis – the student will be awarded the title Master of Arts (MA). The diploma is issued by the home University (where the student is enrolled), and enjoys reciprocal recognition by the other partner universities.

When to Apply?

Application for entry in 2014/15 will open on 8 September and close on 5 October.

Program Content

The Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies is an advanced inter-disciplinary program designed for both students and practitioners, offering an expertise in four specialized fields: Conflict Resolution (Belgrade); Peace and Development (Sarajevo); Mediation for Development, Peace, and Security (Basel); and Peace and Security in South East Europe (Zagreb).

This program is the first regional master’s program in Peace Studies, providing a unique perspective and high-quality education. Encompassing scientific achievements of various disciplines, including political science, sociology, history, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, it represents a crucial contribution toward advancing understanding of various interstate and international conflicts, as well as of some of today’s key global social and geopolitical problems. The regional mobility of students, professors, and practitioners, and articulation of local/regional specificities in the context of global dynamics offers a uniquely broad approach and experience. Besides enhancing theoretical and methodological capacities in the area of peace and conflict studies, the program offers students an opportunity for independent research and option to take part in collaborative problem-solving projects.

The overarching aim of the program is to enable students to develop their theoretical knowledge, diagnostic capacities, and practical skills related to preventing and resolving complex conflicts. By completing this master’s program, students will be simultaneously empowered as researchers and practitioners.

The Master program is taught in English language.

Entrance Requirements

To be admitted to the Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies, students must:

§ hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent diploma
§ have an average grade of at least 8.00 (for students from Serbia)
§ be proficient in the English language

Interested applicants must submit the following documents:

§ a completed application form (available on the website)
§ a certified copy of a diploma obtained at the undergraduate level
diploma supplements (if applicable)
§ CV (one page)
§ a motivation letter indicating applicant’s research interest (up to 1000 words)

Tuition Fee

1,500 EUR in Serbian dinars payable in four instalments. The tuition fee covers all costs of a two-semester studying at the University of Belgrade. In case of student mobility in the second semester, travel and accommodation costs are not covered.
