Sarajevo 2014 Summer Program in War and Peace
Sarajevo, Bosnia-Hercegovina

Scholarship / Financial aid: limited scholarships are available for students from the Balkans and other developing countries

Date: June 16-28, 2014

Deadline: April 15, 2014

Open to: undergraduates, graduate students, professionals

Announcement follows

The Balkan Institute, in collaboration with the Geneva School of Diplomacy, is pleased to announce the Sarajevo 2014 Summer Program in War and Peace to be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Hercegovina from June 16, 2014 through June 28, 2014. June 28th marks the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo that triggered the outbreak of World War-I. As historian John Keegan asserts, "The Second World War, when it came in 1939, was unquestionably the outcome of the First, and in large measure its continuation." This program, launched around this historic milestone, will be held in the historic Hotel Europe, a few blocks from where the unimaginable carnage of the 20th century began.

Sarajevo 2014, designed for undergraduates, graduate students, professionals including diplomats and other representatives of NGO's and IGO's, as well as non-students interested in professional development, will be a two-week program exploring the timeless issues of war and peace through the vantage point of scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. Three courses and a variety of panels will be offered. Dr. Ivo Banac will provide historical meaning and context to the the events of June 28, 1914 in his course explaining The Outbreak of the Great War. Dr. Colum Murphy will explain The Bosnian War at the End of the 20th Century. Dr. Bill Wechsler will lecture on The Lessons of Bosnia in Global Context. 21st century conflict, including recent events in Ukraine and Crimea, will also be explored.

The course will cost 1,500 euros that will include all courses; housing in a downtown hostel a block from where the program will be held; breakfasts and lunches from June 16th through June 28th; opening and closing dinners; and two trips in Bosnia
-- one around the City of Sarajevo viewing the remnants of the Bosnian War of the 1990's and to the historic city of Mostar; and the other to Srebrenica where the largest massacre in Europe since WW-II took place. Upgraded accommodation is available upon request.

There will be an early registration discount of 20% (300 euros) for those applying to the program, being admitted, and paying tuition in full by April 15, 2014. Limited scholarships are available for students from the Balkans and other developing countries.
